Black walnut is an excellent tonewood, especially for percussive instruments. We've made many snares out of black walnut and found that it has a warm, woody presence with a bit of a lower pitch than standard maple shells, it offers itself to a complex, dark, and musical sound. This works especially well in the context of snare drum.
