Simple, clean, and sexy. Those are the three words I would use to describe this drum. I wanted to build something that was hyper-functional, sounded great, and looked amazing. All without extraneous bells and whistles. Back to the basics, keeping it classy.
We started with one of our handmade mahogany Stave snare drum shells. I used a piece of old growth mahogany that has an incredibly clear grain structure. Mahogany always makes for a wonderful sounding instrument because it is incredibly stable. Mahogany is softer than other wood species, for instance Maple, so it generally tends to yield a lower, fatter note. The shell is 5/8 of an inch thick and features hybrid bearing edges that have a 45-degree cut on the inside, and 1/4 inch radius roundover on the outside for increased head to Shell contact and effortless tuning.
We kept the Finish simple on this one. It has seven hand-rubbed coats of tung oil. This finish allows the shells to be completely unrestrained and undam pond. It also leaves a very tactile finish to the wood that allows you to clearly feel and see the structure of the grain without artificially coloring the beautiful orange glow from the mahogany.
We went with top-notch Hardware all the way around. It features our signature HHG single point lugs. Each lug is CNC machined, featuring a subtle concentric circle profile in the center as well as for radiused fill its around the circumference of the post.
We outfitted this drum with a super smooth Inde strainer, is very classy looking strainer with impeccable action.
This drum also features our internal tone control mechanism. Very similar to some of the mechanisms on coveted vintage drums, with some key upgrades and improvements. The mechanism is completely lined in felt to prevent the mechanism itself from rattling or vibrating in anyway, and it is also preset in our shop so that it cannot be loosened any further than 1/8 of an inch below the batter head, this puts it far enough away to not engage the head, but also keeps it close enough that you are never more than a couple of turns away from fool engagement. It also means that the mechanism will never accidentally be loosened to the point where it falls apart inside the drum. We love these dampener mechanisms, they allow the player to have incredible control over the sound of the drum with just a couple of twists of the knob. Of course, the knob is and made out of the same mahogany wood used to build the drum and is stood off from the Shell with a surgical grade stainless steel spacer.
Some of the icing on the cake includes heavy duty 2.3 mm chrome triple flanged hoops, a diecast butt plate, a diecast air vent, diecast antique silver HHG badge, all Evans drum heads, and Puresound custom Pro 24 strand brass snare wires.
The drum sounds amazing. It is Snappy and articulate while maintaining a huge punch that sits well in any BackBeat as a main snare, but would also work fantastic for a side snare. In short, we are very proud of this instrument and I really hope you will decide to scoop it up today! As with all of our drums and listings shown, when you place an order with HHG Drums, your new instrument will be hand-crafted in house, from scratch. The drum shown in the pictures was built for a customer, and now resides with them.
