Function, form, and class those were the driving forces behind this snare.

First priority was to create a snare that would sound fantastic. I always enjoy a shallower snare for that super crispy crack, so I went with a classic 5.5 depth. However, the real sonic star of this show is the European Acacia wood that the shell is crafted from. Acacia an extremely hard wood, but is also very fiborous and rigid. The strong and interlocking fibers in this wood have made it a perfect choice in building wooden marine vessels for centuries, all the way back to biblical times. In the context of a musical instrument, especially a snare drum, it is a perfect choice. The density and tension of shell allows it to react quickly to your input, transmitting vibration quickly from your stick, through the shell and to both heads. Making for a drum that is incredibly sensitive, with an incredibly expressive and dynamic range. Everything from a subtle ghost note to a crushing rim-shot has character, balance, and definition.

You eat with your eyes first- this classic culinary phrase is just as applicable in the world of drums, in short an instrument needs to beautiful. To achieve this I relied heavily on the natural beauty of the acacia wood, and added a bit of visual intrigue by applying a custom-blended blueberry satin oil finish. I use freshly picked Pennsylvania blueberries to achieve this fantastic color. The berries are mashed, blended and concentrated until the color is just right. Then it is emulsified with my special blend of oils and waxes, and finally applied to the drum. Finally the inside and outside receive about 8 hand-rubbed coats of the wax/oil blend without the blueberry coloring to provide a lustrous and protective satin sheen.
