If you're looking for the stave snare drum to end all stave snare drums you can end your search right here. This drum is one of the best instruments I think we've ever produced at HHG. We use nothing but the highest quality materials and components, ridiculous attention to detail, and meticulous craftsmanship to build what we think is the perfect snare drum.
ABOUT THE SHELL:
The foundation of any good drum is the shell. And the shell on this drum stand head-and-shoulders above all others. The first and most important decision when making a shell is material choice, here, we went with one of the most luxurious and expensive exotic woods on the planet... Ziricote.
Ziricote is the most dramatic member of the Cordia genus, and stands apart from other exotic woods due to itÃÂÃÂÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs unique grain lines that frequently depict spider webbing, marbled swirls, cloud bursts, mountains, valleys and other captivating patterns. It has a very limited growing region within Southern Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. The heartwood is reddish brown with irregular chocolate or black streaks that tend to form abstract art within itself.
With a density higher than rosewood, Ziricote machines very well. It is able to take a very smooth finish and a high polish. Ziricote wood has a medium to fine texture and a straight to slightly interlocking grain. The highly figured spider web grain is similar to what can be found in Brazilian Rosewood only more complex. Surface has a natural waxy appearance and takes on a satin finish with simple sanding.
Well known as a tonewood, Ziricote is highly esteemed for instrument making. Many Luthiers repeatedly comment that Ziricote provides and experience identical to the finest rosewood. Others take note of its Ebony-like crispness. One guitarist described his experience as ÃÂÃÂÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂnot quite as deep as EIR, but with a sharper attack and a bit more note separationÃÂÃÂÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ. In short, ziricote is one of the most beautiful Woods on the earth, and also uniquely suited to making beautiful sounding instruments.
The shell itself was machine to a finished thickness of 3/8", a perfect balance between rigidity and the ability to resonate. At HHG we CNC machine our shells so that they are perfectly round and of an even thickness to a couple thousands of an inch. A degree of accuracy and precision but no other company can achieve.
The show features our custom hybrid edges don't have a 1/4 inch radius outer cut, a 45-degree intercut, and a hand radiused apex. This Edge takes full advantage of the specialty stave shell construction and allows perfect and even contact between the mylar of the drumhead and the shell.
THE FINISH:
With a wood species this unique and beautiful the only true way to do it any justice is to do a 100% clear mirror gloss finish. We applied our favorite high performance to component polyurethane to this drum, then wet sanded, buffed, and polished it to a flawless mirror like sheen.
The inside of the shell is hand polished with a proprietary blend of oils and waxes to not only protect the shell from absorbing or losing too much moisture to quickly, but also to bring out the beauty of the shell as much on the interior as on the exterior
THE HARDWARE:
We wanted to make this drum distinguished yet classy, the hardware choices we made were geared specifically to achieve this goal.
We started with our subtle and unique HHG single point lugs. Each lug is CNC machined, featuring a subtle concentric circle profile in the center as well as for radiused fill its around the circumference of the post.
Then we moved on to some hoops that nod a bit too beautiful drums of yesteryear, 3 mm Chrome over steel no-flange hoops. We paired these with some beautifully classic vintage style claw hooks.
For the snare system we opted to use a heavy duty Trick strainer paired with a diecast butt plate. The snare wires are Puresound Custom Pro brass 24 strand.
As with most of our snare drums, we installed our proprietary internal tone control mechanism. This is similar to the vintage mechanisms found on old Slingerland and Ludwig Drums, with a couple of key upgrades. We put in some safety measures so that mechanism can never be loosened more than about an eighth of an inch away from the batter head. We hand make the operation knobs ourselves, on this drum we went with a handsome mahogany knob with the HHG logo engraved on it.
The drum also features a heavy duty diecast chrome air vent, as well as Evans drum heads on the batter and snare Side featuring the HHG logo.
Finally, we topped everything off with our bespoke diecast antique brass badge.
In short, I don't think that we have ever produced a better looking or sounding snare drum at HHG Drums. We're incredibly proud of this instrument, and would love to build one for you!
As with all of our drums and listings shown, when you place an order with HHG Drums, your new instrument will be hand-crafted in house, from scratch. The drum shown in the pictures was built for a customer, and now resides with them.
